Trainspotting: The Musical

Two actors stand against a wall of projected posters and shopfronts, beneath two angled screens of projected tenement windows
Four men sit in pools of red light on a dark stage beneath two large screens of green and red cranes and rusted texture
A woman in an orange top stands beside a pram while figures move in silhouette against yellow projected walls
Actors face each other in front of a poster-covered wall, beneath red-toned projected tenement façades
A performer in yellow reaches up in front of green underwater projections, with a huge upside-down face on the screen above
A woman in a denim jacket sits on a red floor while a man leans on a balcony rail above, against blue projected terraced houses
A pub scene at a bar with a Tennents sign, the cast in small groups beneath teal projected tenement windows

Trainspotting: The Musical

Musical Theatre · Directed by Caroline Jay Ranger

Video and projection design for the world premiere of Trainspotting: The Musical, Irvine Welsh’s adaptation of his novel, directed by Caroline Jay Ranger at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, London, in summer 2026. Five LED screens built into Colin Richmond’s dilapidated Edinburgh railway-station set carry the show across 52 scenes.

The approach is “living stills”: still location backgrounds with small portals of movement, in a print-collage palette of oranges, yellows and blacks, with cool blues and a teal-green underwater sequence.
